About us

Christophe Béranger and Jonathan Pranlas-Descours develop an ever-changing, elusive and assertive creation that embodies the contradictions of our world. As "choreographers of matter", they base their creations on hybrid, collaborative scenic writing, using the porosity between live performance and the visual arts as a key to studying bodies in movement. They see the body as a vector of meaning for today's political body. Each creation is presented as a manifesto, revealing the contradictions of our world and reinforcing the audience's experience through a dedicated time and form of performance.
Lucie Gagneux
One comes from a visual arts background, having worked in theater before taking up dance at P.A.R.T.S., the school founded in Brussels by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. As a performer, he has worked with Roméo Castellucci, Sasha Waltz, Mathilde Monnier... His name is Jonathan Pranlas-Descours. The other, more attached to the body, studied at the Conservatoire de La Rochelle.
Christophe Béranger joined the Ballet de Lorraine in 1992, where he has been dancer, choreographer and artistic assistant. In 2003, he received the insignia of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres for his contribution to the CCN - Ballet de Lorraine and his commitment to cultural action and the democratization of dance.
"Impossible to imagine a more radical dance show. "
- TRANSFUGES
"The Sine Qua Non Art duo is never better than when it wields visual art and conceptual performance. "
- UMOOVE
"Christophe Béranger and Jonathan Pranlas-Descours, who head up La Rochelle-based company Sine Qua Non Art, are globetrotting choreographers who feed off the tumult of the world to try to escape it."
- SOUTH WEST
These different interpretative backgrounds, rich in experience and diversity, form the basis of the complementary tandem work carried out by the two artists. And it was together that they decided, in 2012, to found their company Sine Qua Non Art, and establish it in La Rochelle. Right from the start of the company, in 2013, they were selected as P.S.O. artists of the year, the French network for emerging choreography, with the solo ''Topie Impitoyable'' which was presented in Avignon. The same year, they are awarded the Tanzrecherche NRW#13 research grant in Cologne, which enables them to create ''Exuvie'', their famous creation in 150 kg of wax, marking a decisive point in the porosity between the visual arts and live music. In 2014, they won 1st Prize in the(Re)connaissance competition with their piece ''Des ailleurs sans lieu''. Then it's ''Donne-moi quelque chose qui ne meurt pas'', a 2016 creation, which receives support from the BNP PARIBAS Foundation, with 80 suspended knives that rise during the performance and confirms their scenic writing with a strong, generous gesture.

Their collaboration with musicians who compose specially for their choreographic works is even more marked in their creation ''VERSUS'', in 2018, which combines dance, visual arts, electronic music and baroque singing, and for which they are SACD Laureates for stage music writing and receive the Groupe CDC - Nouveaux Talents Danse 2018 prize. Since 2018, they have been creating pieces for young audiences based on urban cultures, a mix of street art, digital arts and beatbox/live music. In order to be able to irrigate remote territories and bring dance to as many people as possible, particularly to rural territories in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region where dance has little presence. The triptych - Desires's Series#1 (Performative installation - 2019) / Nos désirs font désordre (Set piece for 11 dancers - 2021) / O Futuro é ancestral (Immersive performance and exhibition - Winner of the ''Cruzamentos' ' Franco-Brazilian program - 2022 and ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE Venice finalist - 2023) marks a turning point in their collaboration and affirms the visual art dimension of their creations, no longer as scenography or scenic device, but as Body-Scenography / Immersive device for the public. Out of the blue # - 2022 - creates a surprise with its immersive journey, a cabaret of curiosities on diasporic cultural identities, celebrating the diversity of the company's collaborators through each solo, in atypical spaces, including local communities... from La Rochelle / Limoges / Buenos Aires / Zagreb / Sofia...

At the same time, they create for national companies, in France, notably for the Ballet de l'opéra de Metz and internationally, in 2016, for the Kosovo National Ballet ''Recomposed'', a piece on the issue of migration since the ballet is made up of former refugees. In 2018, they were invited to create a '' Sacre du printemps - Consagracion '' for the national company Danza Contemporánea de Cuba in Havana with 105 musicians from the Gran Teatro orchestra, presented at the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonzo to open the month of French culture in Cuba. For this work, they receive the Villanueva critics' prize for best show of 2018. These are all projects that they will subsequently host in France thanks to the Scènes Nationales network and their partnership with La Coursive - Scène Nationale de La Rochelle.

Committed to the work of transmission and creation for and with the younger generation of artists, they carry out creation projects, repertory transmissions, cooperations and training with diverse groups, as much invited by renowned institutions as in remote, less mediatized spaces...

They work at theEcole du Ballet du Nord in Lille, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon, L'Odyssey Dance Theatre in Singapore, Epidaurus Lyceum in Greece, Ballet Junior de Genève, HKAPA - Hong-Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Festival Danser Maintenant in Cotonou, Escola Livre de Dança da Maré in Rio de Janeiro, Studio Architanz Tokyo, Belgrade Dance Institute in Serbia....

They also work with national ballets, including Cuba, Jin Xing Dance Theatre in Shanghai, Sibiu Ballet- Romania, Ballet del Teatro San Martin de Buenos Aires - Argentina and Carte Blanche Bergen - Norway.
They also carry out large-scale projects, notably with Lia Rodrigues ''Passarella'', which was a major international exchange project between young people from the Centro de Artes Da Maré, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's favela, and the Centre Intermondes in La Rochelle. ''RE-SERENADE'', which brought together 60 dancers from the conservatories of La Rochelle, Niort, Poitiers and Châtellerault and an orchestra of teachers and students in a major repertory project and regional tour.''KOMMOS'', an invitation from the Athens and Epidaurus festivals, a piece for 105 young artists of 14 different nationalities, dancers.euses et acteurs.trices, an in situ project created in the ancient and archaeological site of Epidaurus in Greece.

Since 2017, they have been artistic and pedagogical coordinators ofABC - Atlantique Ballet Contemporain, an artistic training program for dancers at the La Rochelle Conservatoire. Being backed by an independent company from the professional world gives this training, supported by the Conservatoire de Musique et Danse de La Rochelle, a learning environment with characteristics close to the professional reality of a dancer today. Artists and choreographers from a wide range of aesthetic backgrounds are invited to give workshops, pass on their repertoire and create with the young artists of tomorrow. In September 2022, the training will become a D.U Danse - Diplôme Universitaire with La Rochelle University, and a two-year promotion.

Committed to the democratization of dance and access to culture for all, they run workshop projects and raise awareness of the choreographic art form, from the very young to university students. Every year, they take over the gymnasiums of middle and high schools in the Charente-Maritime department with a traveling project to share the practice of dance with as many people as possible. In 2017, they initiated a cycle of work and residencies with so-called "hindered" audiences, notably in a creative process with a group of blind and visually impaired people in Poitiers, a 6-month immersion residency at the Ehpad du Plessis in La Rochelle and a daily workshop for staff at the CHU de La Rochelle, with the ARS network. In 2020, together with La Sirène - SMAC de La Rochelle and Carré Amelot, they are launching a major project of music, dance and digital workshops and performances in the La Rochelle metropolitan area.

Always seeking to open up the art of choreography to as many people as possible, they join forces with local partners such as the University or the CNAR - Sur le pont, and propose a grouping of local associations and dance schools around dance events such as BABELBAL, inviting all couples dances to a festive event, and TOUS A LA BARRE, which takes over the public space for free practice accessible to all levels.

The porosity between creations, teaching, transmission projects, outreach and audience encounters on the local, regional, national and international territory is the very essence of the company's operation, led by Christophe Béranger and Jonathan Pranlas-Descours since 2012 in the La Rochelle area.
